First, I love my job. LOVE love it. I work with some pretty amazing people. My co-workers make a job that could be a downer very pleasant. My boss is very encouraging and really lets me have autonomy in my job. The client services team (of which I am a part) is also super cool and we work together like a well oiled machine. I am learning a lot from my co-workers every day. All in all the days at Project Horizon are very pleasant.
Second, I love what I do. I never thought that I would want to do counseling, especially with women who are victims of domestic violence, but I genuinely enjoy meeting with my clients. Listening to their stories, empathizing, and helping them cope with the challenges they have faced or are facing is a wonderful experience. I love those moments when they have a breakthrough, find courage inside themselves, gain self-respect or finally realize their own worth. Those moments make it worth it.
Probably my favorite part of my job right now is my group. I started a counseling group for a few of my clients that meets once a week. I set the group up to go for eight weeks, but to be honest I am going to be sad to see it end. The beauty of having a group is seeing my clients interact and help each other. One of the common things that happens in domestic violence situations is that the victims are isolated from friends and family... coming to group and associating with other women who understand their situation seems to give them strength. It is awesome.
Anyway, my job is awesome. Tomorrow I am going in at noon (I have flex time from last week) and taking homemade pasta for our Mediterranean themed staff meeting pot luck. Yeah, just another reason why I love my job.
