Some of you who follow me on facebook saw that I posted this article on my wall (or timeline...whatever). Southern Living chose Saucy's Walk-Up BBQ in Petersburg as one of the 20 best BBQ joints in the South. Very few people know that I have always dreamed about entering BBQ competitions. I don't really have to win, although that would be nice. I just want to to eat other people's great BBQ and get the whole culture and experience behind it. When I read this article I knew I had to swing by and check it out. When I went down to visit my folks my Dad and I headed out and met an old friend of mine who lives in Petersburg.
I was quite surprised when I saw the whole restaurant was a big shipping container.
Just from looking at it from the outside I knew this place was going to be good.
We ended up getting some pulled pork with slaw on top because their pork butt was what they were known for.
When it came out it looked like this, I love when the grease and sauce bleeds though the paper it's wrapped in!
When I opened up this beautiful meat package...let me re-phrase that...well you know what I mean...I almost didn't take this picture because I wanted to dive right in!
The pork was awesome! Nice smoke, good sauce, and big chunks of meat that weren't mushy. The bun was eh, I mean it was your average grocery store bun. The slaw was good, but could have used some more vinegar. It did however have cilantro and little diced up bits of jalapeno, which I loved!!!
After the sandwich I saw someone with ribs and I had to try some, so we got ribs for dessert! Their ribs were just as good as the pork sandwich. I would say they are some of the best ribs I have ever had. They were thick and juicy, smokey, and chewy and tender all at the same time! I think if I were to go back I would get the ribs.
All in all I think Saucy's is very deserving of their recognition. If you are ever in the Richmond/Petersburg area I would make the trip out. Just remember Petersburg is kind of ghetto!
